AMX SERIES The AMX Series is a family of High Performance Linear AC power sources covering the power range from 500VA to 12kVA, with standard models and up to 30kVA with the M5283 paralleling option. Full power frequency range is from 20Hz-5kHz The product line offers both single and selectable single or three phase models.
Units are conservatively designed and output power ratings are based on the most severe combination of input line, output voltage, power factor, and temperature. This approach to product design allows the AMX Series to excel when delivering the high peak load currents demanded in the AC test environment.

ASX SERIES The ASX Series is a family of High Performance Switched Mode amplifiers AC power sources covering the power range from 1.5kVA to 6kVA (12kVA to be released soon). Frequency range is from 15Hz-1.2kHz. The product line offers both single and selectable single or three phase models. Units are conservatively designed and output power ratings are based on the most severe combination of input line, output voltage, power factor, and temperature.

MS SERIES Solid State Technology with Unmatched Price/Performance Ratio.
Pacific MS-Series is a family of High Performance Line Conditioners/Frequency Converters that provides highly flexible, yet reliable, AC power ranging from 62.5 to 750kVA+. Using field-proven double conversion methods, the MS-Series offers unmatched power quality without sacrificing size or efficiency.
Input AC power is rectified to DC by a special input power supply section. This minimizes input current distortion and prevents the load power factor from reflecting back onto the utility line. The DC is then converted back to AC by a high frequency, solid state, pulse-width modulated switchmode inverter under the control of a highly stable digital
oscillator. The result is exceptional system performance with maximum reliability. There is now a specific Aerospace Testing version of the MS Series with frequency range up to 880Hz and full programmability.

TECHNOLOGY AND APPLICATION NOTE
Pacific Power Source has been manufacturing AC Power Sources, and only AC Power Sources, for nearly 35 years and is one of the World leaders in this area. They are currently unique in offering a full range of both single phase, and selectable single or three phase, models in each of the two mainstream technologies in current use.
AC Power Sources are used to simulate domestic and aircraft AC mains supplies for test purposes. The majority of applications are in the aerospace field where aircraft systems, radar and avionic equipment need to have a controllable local supply for either development or manufacturing test, or for in service maintenance testing – they are also used extensively by manufacturers of DC power supplies and other electronic equipment to ensure correct operation over a range of mains voltages, frequencies, and transient and interrupt conditions.
Linear amplifier technology provides the highest performance in terms of bandwidth or frequency range, low distortion, fast response (rise time) and low noise, it is, however less efficient, heavier and more costly for a given level of power. Linear is ideal for EMC (harmonics & flicker) testing because of the ultra low distortion coupled with fast response and high crest factor capability – so that the power source performance does not mask the flicker or Dmax performance of the unit under test. Linear is also ideal when output frequencies above 1 kHz are required. The available maximum output current from a linear will, however, de-rate with reducing voltage and power factor.
Pacific’s range of linear models (the AMX Series) ranges from 500VA to 12kVA in single sources, and up to 30kVA with linked or parallel sources, full output power is available over the whole 20Hz-5kHz frequency range.
PWM, or switched mode, technology (the dominant technology now used by other AC Power source manufacturers) has exactly opposite characteristics and will give full current at low voltage and zero power factor – making it ideal for motor and transformer test applications, or in capacitive load applications. PWM is more efficient in power conversion terms, and consequently lighter, smaller, and less costly for a given level of output power – but has somewhat reduced performance as regards output distortion and noise, frequency range and at high power factors and higher voltages.
The Pacific range of PWM technology sources (ASX Series) also encompasses both single phase, and selectable single or three phase, models ranging from 1.5kVA to 6kVA. The 6kVA model in a 5U (8¾”) high 19” rack mount case has the highest power density of any AC Power Source on the World market!
Both Series share similar electronic controllers that are available as a low cost manually operated unit with limited functionality (primarily variable voltage and frequency), or as a manual or programmable full function unit capable of program (set-up) storage, waveform customisation, transient generation, and with additional measurement and display functions including harmonic analysis, inrush current measurement, programmable output impedance etc.
All models have Power Analyser type displays of output voltage (phase to neutral and phase to phase in three phase models), RMS and peak current, power factor, crest factor, Power output and VA output.
Interfaces can be RS232 or IEEE488.2 and are compliant with SCPI. There is also, as standard, an auxiliary I/O connector on all models which provides access to synchronising and clock signals, and allows for external low voltage inputs for modulation, or to use the power source as a wideband power amplifier.
For higher power applications the PWM technology MS Series provide high quality bulk power rated at up to 63kVA per cabinet – and up to 12 cabinets can be, and are being, operated in parallel to give output power up to 750kVA. MS Series can also use the advanced controllers from the AMX/ASX Series to provide fully controllable, flexible power for aerospace test purposes at up to 1 kHz output frequency.
There is a newly released GUI software package for use with any of the UPC Controllers, and Pacific Power Source have also completely renewed their website at www.pacificpower.com
