ELECTRONIC LOADS (HOECHERL & HACKL)
ZS SERIES The ZS range are optimised for use in laboratories, manufacturing and quality control. The units are available in four voltage ranges 60 V, 120 V, 300 V and 600 V and currents up to 2700 A. Power ranges from 500 W to 25,200 W – and three units can be paralleled in Master/Slave mode, giving a maximum of 75.6kW continuous rating. The ZS units are capable of taking a short term over load of up to two or three (depending on model and temperature) times the rated power. The ZS loads have a built-in analogue interface as standard with a fully isolated version available as an option. Up to 3 analog interfaces may be fitted. There are also 3 plug in slots for digital communication interfaces - RS232 +USB, GPIB, RS485 and the H&H System Bus for control and readback from multiple units from a single main interface is also available in both cable and fibre-optic format.
A key feature of Electronic Loads, in fact the very reason for their existence, instead of the lower cost (and bulkier) alternative of using banks of resistors, is their ability to simulate real life dynamic loads. In this area the ZS Series use the latest technology and components, and benefit from H&H’s 20 years worth of experience in designing state of the art dynamic loads, ZS rise times range from 50usec at the lower powers to 120/180usec at the very highest power level (25/75kW) – making them the only possible solution in some
demanding aerospace and defence applications. Internally controlled load on and off times range from 100us to 1sec in dynamic mode. ZS loads will sink full power down to 1.2 volts as standard. There are Zero Volt options available for many models to extend the full power operation down to effectively zero volts.
Applications include testing of power supplies, generators, batteries, fuel cells, protection and switching devices, batteries and chargers, lifetime tests with complex load profiles..

ZSLC Liquid Cooled Series share all the characteristics of ZS Series, but cover power ranges from 6kW to 20kW and have water cooling instead of air cooling, resulting in a more compact unit for any given level of power.
ZSLV Low Voltage loads are designed to carry high current at very low voltage – typical application is in fuel cell research and development, Models range from 1 to 6kW and 2250A at 220mV. Maximum voltage for these models is 20V, Dynamic and interface features are as on the main ZS Series.
PL SERIES The low cost, lower power, PL Series DC Loads offer constant current and resistance modes, (plus constant power when operated via external interface), in-built dynamic loading, optional RS232 and GPIB programming, with analog programming standard. The H&H System Bus allows multiple units to be controlled, and measurements read back from, using a single GPIB or RS232 interface. An executable control programme on CD and LabView drivers are included with models with an interface.
The Series comprises 300, 600 and 900 W models with up to 3x short term overload. Voltage ranges of 60, 120 240 and 400 available, current ranges up to 150 A. 60V and 120V models include 4 terminal remote sensing of voltage. Up to 5 units may be run in parallel. A battery discharge mode is included which will automatically switch the load to 0A on reaching a preset voltage.

PML Programmable Multiload 12 or 24 channels each of 100W in a 5U,19” rack housing. Available with voltage ranges of 38, 60, 120 and 240V and maximum currents from 20A to 3A respectively. Channels are all individually isolated and may be connected in parallel to increase current rating, or can be used for negative voltages. Setting can be manual, via analog input, or programmable via optional RS232 or GPIB interfaces (SCPI compatible). Each channel module has a separate measurement display, and analog measurement outputs are available for each channel, as well as on the standard RS485 fast serial bus. Operating modes are CC-CR-CV and CP. Protection is extensive, fans are temperature controlled.
ML Multiload available with 12 or 24 channels each of 100W in a 5U, 19” rack housing. Available with 38V 20A modules or 60V 15A modules, Each channel is isolated allowing use for multi output or mixed polarity power supply testing, channels may be paralleled to increase current and power rating. Setting is manual via front panel or via the analog inputs, Modes are constant current and constant resistance. There are three setpoint transmitters for dynamic loading, each with up to 6 values settable, setting by external relay, logic level or PLC. Operating modes are CC and CR. Protection is extensive, fans are temperature controlled.
PBL Programmable 2 Channel Load. 16TE cassette format, 6U high (5 will fit in a 19” rack housing), each with 2 isolated channels of 200W total power – the power can be apportioned in any ratio between the two channels, which can be run in parallel. Channels can be 60V/30A, 120V/14A or 240V/8A and can be mixed. Modes are CC–CR-CV-CP. There is a standard RS485 fast bus, and optional IEEE or RS232 interfaces (SCPI compatible). Setting can be via interface or front panel controls, analog measuring outputs are also provided. An adjustable inrush voltage can be preset which will inhibit load current until a threshold is exceeded. PBL-A is an analog version with manual and analog control (0-10V) only. Power for a single PBL is from a 12V, 1A dc socket adaptor.
LM Load Modules – available in two formats, Open Frame ( -OF ) and cassette ( -TE ), and with rating of 100W either as 60V/20A or 240V/4A. The open frame module can have a plug on RS232 interface, can be used with others in Master/Slave configuration and has analog control as standard. A 3HU 19” rack mounting housing, with inbuilt power supply, is available for three LM-OF modules. The LM-TE cassette is designed to fit up to 6 in a 3U high 19”housing which incorporates power supply. The LM-TE 19” housing can optionally have IEEE488 or RS232 interface and allows a single interface to control up to 192 channels in a multi-channel system.
