Electrical Equipment Calibration

Our environmentally-controlled UKAS-accredited calibration laboratory offers a range of electrical equipment service and calibration, from a certificate of calibration traceable via our own standards to National Physics Laboratory, to a full UKAS accredited calibration. Combined with our modern service facility we can offer full service for all types of electrical and electronic instruments.

Our calibration laboratory is accredited by UKAS for DC and LF measurement, with particular focus on AC power and energy, both active and reactive measurements.

Please see our UKAS Schedule of Accreditation (PDF). Please note that items not covered by our Schedule of Accreditation may still be calibrated but they will not be covered by our UKAS accreditation. Please contact our calibration team for details.
Although Caltest Instruments UKAS Schedule of Accreditation and laboratory capabilities have a focus towards the calibration of power and energy standards, working standards, electric meter testing and associated equipment in the electricity supply industry, our UKAS accreditation and calibration laboratory covers a large range of AC power sources and electronic and electrical test equipment.

The majority of the laboratory’s capabilities are derived from basic principle, using primary standards, some of which have over 30 years of traceability. This method offers a high level of stability and accuracy. Our calibration staff have a combined experience of over 50 years in UKAS accredited calibration laboratories and are available for advice on all calibration subjects.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is UKAS calibration and do I need it?

keyboard_arrow_down
UKAS calibration is performed by a laboratory assessed against ISO/IEC 17025, the international standard for testing and calibration laboratories. A UKAS-accredited calibration certificate provides independently verified, traceable measurements — traceable back to national standards held by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL). You typically need UKAS calibration when your quality management system (e.g. ISO 9001), industry regulations, or customer contracts require accredited, traceable measurements. If your equipment is used for compliance testing, safety-critical measurements, or regulatory submissions, UKAS calibration gives you the documented assurance that auditors and customers expect.

How often should I calibrate my test equipment?

keyboard_arrow_down
Most electrical test equipment — including power supplies, electronic loads, power analysers, and safety testers — should be calibrated at least once a year. However, the right calibration interval depends on several factors: how frequently the equipment is used, the manufacturer's recommendations, the stability of previous calibration results, and any requirements set by your industry regulations or quality system. Equipment used in demanding environments or for safety-critical testing may need more frequent calibration. Our calibration team can advise on the best interval for your specific instruments.

Can you calibrate equipment you don't sell?

keyboard_arrow_down
Yes. We calibrate and service electrical test equipment from over 30 manufacturers, regardless of where it was originally purchased. This includes brands we represent — such as Pacific Power Source, Elektro-Automatik, GW Instek, and Associated Research — as well as third-party equipment from Chroma, Kikusui, Yokogawa, Keysight, Fluke, TDK-Lambda, and many others. If your instrument isn't listed on our site, contact us — we can usually help.

What is your calibration turnaround time?

keyboard_arrow_down
Standard calibration turnaround is 5 to 10 working days from receipt of your equipment, when pre-booked with an RMA number. If you have an urgent requirement — for example, a production line waiting on a calibrated instrument — we offer express and priority services. Contact our service team to discuss turnaround for your specific equipment.

Do you offer on-site calibration?

keyboard_arrow_down
Yes. Our field calibration team provides on-site UKAS ISO 17025 accredited calibration across the UK and Ireland, with international visits available by arrangement. On-site calibration is ideal for large or rack-mounted test systems — such as high-power AC/DC power supplies and electronic loads — where shipping is impractical, or when minimising equipment downtime is critical to your operations. Our engineers bring portable reference standards and can calibrate most instruments in your facility.

What calibration certificate will I receive?

keyboard_arrow_down
You will receive either a UKAS-accredited calibration certificate or a traceable calibration certificate, depending on the equipment type and your requirements. A UKAS certificate carries the UKAS logo and is recognised internationally under mutual recognition agreements — it provides the highest level of assurance for audits, regulatory submissions, and quality systems. A traceable certificate confirms calibration against standards traceable to the National Physical Laboratory but without UKAS accreditation. Our team will recommend the appropriate certificate for your instrument and application.

How do I send my equipment for calibration?

keyboard_arrow_down
Start by completing the Calibration Service Form on this page to request an RMA (Return Merchandise Authorisation) number. Once you have your RMA, pack your equipment securely and ship it to our laboratory in Petersfield, Hampshire, with the RMA number clearly marked. If you prefer, we can arrange collection from your site. When your equipment arrives, our service team will confirm receipt, provide an estimated completion date, and contact you if any additional work is needed beyond the original request.
